The purpose of the program is to bridge the gap in education to improving the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, adults, parents and caregivers. In addition, through the support of the Bridges program the aim is to increase and maintain attendance of all students at school and develop participation and leadership for students and parents/caregivers in all learning environments.
An essential component of the program is the establishment of community and cultural connections in schools and other learning environments for students, individuals and families unpinned with ongoing support. This can be achieved in numerous ways such as, school based cultural activities, advocacy, facilitation of discussions, information provision, referrals and linkages to other support services and initiatives such as homework centres or learning hubs. In addition to the initiatives identified above the support worker will also provide individual assistance with students and families.
